Amanda’s Top 5 Michigan Breweries

Amanda’s Top 5 Michigan Breweries

Categories: Essence Restaurant Group

Unless you’re living with your head buried in the sand, you’ve surely noticed we are amidst a movement praising microbrews and delicious crafts. Beer snobs, rejoice! We have seen so many changes since The Green Well opened in 2007; particularly Michigan brews overtaking European beer on our menu. We now proudly serve 90-95% Michigan taps daily. While microbrews across the globe are all fabulous in their own way, there’s something about Michigan breweries that tug at our heartstrings. Here’s my list of Michigan’s top five breweries in no particular order, because narrowing it down to five is difficult enough!

Why? Simply put, everything about this place is badass. From their brews, to the people who work there, to the fact that this brewery is known by the locals as the only cool thing in Marshall, Dark Horse does craft beer how they want to. And they do it well.

1. Dark Horse Brewing Co., Marshall, MI

Brew of choice: Plead The 5th Imperial Stout

Why? Kuhnhenn was a hardware store gone home-brewing supply store back in the early 1970s, and then launched as a brewery in 2001. With the philosophy of, 1) Make beer; 2) Make it delicious; 3) Make more of it, Kuhnhenn fans gladly accept and keep coming back for more.

2. Kuhnhenn Brewing Co., Warren, MI

Brew of choice: DRIPA - Double Rice IPA

Why? Shorts is very near and dear to our hearts at The Green Well. How could they not be after they brewed a beer just for us? Remember Dripalicious? Other than a little special treatment, the eccentricity of the brewing style and the people at Shorts is endearing. Not to mention, their beer is to die for.

3. Shorts Brewing Co., Bellaire, MI

Brew of choice: Good Humans - Dry Hopped Double Brown Ale

Why? Located just a couple doors down from New Holland Brewing Co., these are “the little guys” making awesome beer. It’s also pretty cool that their first distribution was made on bike— from Holland to GR—in a huge winter storm. They’re serious about their beer, all right.

4. Our Brewing Company, Holland, MI

Brew of choice: Peanut Butter Cup Milk Stout

Why? These guys have really come a long way in the last couple years. Previously having slim pickings, Odd Side has done a complete 180. They now offer a wide variety of some of the most unusual flavors you’ve ever heard—Pineapple IPA, for instance—so it’s easy to say there’s something for everyone.

5. Odd Side Ales, Grand Haven, MI

Brew of choice: Black Citra (at the moment, since they’re always brewing new concoctions)!

Now go out there and try something new. No beer ruts allowed!
