Are you starting to feel like weekends in Grand Rapids can be a little boring? Not gonna lie, we’ve thought that, too. But there’s actually a ton of awesome things happening in this little city of ours—you just have to do some digging to find out what’s goin’ on! Too lazy to research? We’ve also been there. But not this time! We’re here to help you have a kicka$$ weekend, filled with more than just the mundane early-morning (albeit necessary) chores like grocery shopping and vacuuming. That stuff can wait! It’s almost summer—time to get outside.
Here’s the plan, kiddos…
Kick the weekend off with a bang… on the drums, that is! Check out Grand Rapids’ thriving music scene at The Pyramid Scheme. Friday’s show features The Go Rounds, The Howlers, and Valentiger. The show starts at 8:30 pm and only costs $8 at the door. Can’t beat awesome bands at wallet-friendly prices!
Afterward, you definitely have to stop by The Green Well for after-concert drinks and snacks (also at wallet-friendly prices!) during Devour Hour, from 10 pm to close. We’ve got plenty of drink options from only $1 (WHAT!?!) and a bunch of snacks between $3 and $5. YUM!
Let’s find a happy medium between sleep-mode and party-mode for this morning. You’ll find that at The Saturday Experience at Grand Rapids Coffee Roasters. This open-house-style roasting and tasting event is scheduled from 10 am - 3 pm (yes, that means you can sleep in and not miss a thing!) Try a shot of espresso or order a $2 pour-over while you watch their unique process, and don’t forget to grab a 2 lb. bag of freshly roasted coffee on your way out!
What’s it gonna be for your Saturday night excursion? Let’s go with The Barley, BBQ, & Beats one-day festival at The Van Andel Arena—bringing smooth whiskey, mouth-watering BBQ, rockin’ tunes, and charity all into one event. Costing $40 at the door (or $35 in advance), the festival goes from 5 pm - 9 pm and benefits the Hospice of Michigan. Local bands Domestic Problems, Mid-Life Crisis, and Big Dudee Roo will lend their talents to the cause. And if you follow a vegan, gluten free, or dairy free diet—you’re in luck! Bartertown Diner will be catering their awesome vegan, GF, and DF-friendly eats at this event.
Once a month, the Downtown Market hosts a Pop-Up Marketplace from 10 am - 4 pm. They’ve got “artisan gifts, local treats, and Michigan-made (and grown!) goodies.” Plus, we’re pretty sure that the fresh air, fresh juices and smoothies from Malamiah Juice Bar will cure any of those pesky, lingering effects from last night’s whiskey consumption.
Later on, check out Grand Rapids’ very own Football Club (“football” as in the fish & chips eating, rowdy crowds cheering, and David Beckham boasting kind of football) as they play the Oakland County FC. Bring your whole family to the 5 pm game at Houseman Field for only $8 each.
Now that sounds like a great weekend! Make it complete by treating yourself to a meal or two at The Green Well on the patio. Who can resist snacking on truffle fries and sipping on a cold brewski underneath the sunshine? See you this weekend!
